Make bear bait

How to make bear bait in spring in Quebec
In spring, Quebec bears emerge from their dens hungry and very greedy: they love sweets, but you also have to make them work a little to keep them coming back regularly.
Why prepare your bait properly?
A good bait must combine odor attraction , food challenge and controlled volume to ensure repeated and effective visits.
Necessary equipment
- Cake Box (Preferably Precision Archery)
- Flavored corn pouch (e.g. Écoours from Meunerie Soucy)
- Molasses or other sweetening agent
- Metal barrel or wooden logs
- Knife or drill (to drill the barrel)
- BOLY camera to observe traffic
1. Prepare the sweet base
-
Choose the box:
- Choose a simple cake box from a well-known brand.
- Avoid “light” mixes containing agents that bears don’t like.
- Add flavored corn: Mix in a pouch of sweet corn to increase the strength of the bait.
- Boost with molasses: Lightly sprinkle the mixture over the top to create a strong, long-lasting aroma.

2. Create the working mechanism
Wooden Logs Option
- Dig a shallow hole (20–30 cm).
- Place logs around the bait.
- The bear will have to move its antlers to access the food.
Metal Barrel Option
- Drill small holes (5–10 mm) evenly spaced.
- Half fill the barrel with your sweet mixture.
- The bear will have to shake or roll the barrel to get the bait out.
Tip: Adjust the diameter and number of holes according to the size of the ingredients to avoid a flow that is too fast or too slow.
3. Choose the ideal location
- Proximity to a mature forest
- Presence of a stream (helps disperse the smell)
- Partial shade (prevents rapid drying of the bait)
- Lookout well placed to minimize your human odor (prevailing wind)
4. Set the bait and monitor
- Place the box/barrel on the ground or on a natural support (30–50 cm high).
- Install your BOLY camera at a distance of 3–5 m, at a slight angle.
- Plan for restocking based on attendance:
- High traffic: refresh every 24 hours.
- Low traffic: 48 hours is sufficient.
5. Analysis and hunting
- Check your snapshots to identify peak activity times.
- Plan your outings for times when bears return most regularly.
- Be patient and respectful: a well-maintained bait maximizes your chances without harming the animal.
